New hat design?

Postby Doug Palumbo » Mon Nov 14, 2011 1:13 am

I love the Irish flat-cap style hats. They seem to fit my personality and over-all look better than fedoras do. I currently have a Dockers brand hat that fits my head well that has a nice blue-collar feel yet can be dressed up. A nice flecked tweed with earthy brown tones and a bit of burnt orange thrown in.

I was wondering if this style of hat could be made in a beaver or beaver/rabbit blend. I know it would be a solid color and not tweed but an Irish style flat cap in fawn or darker brown or even grey or black beaver would be very unique and quite sharp looking.

I have seen something similar at Optimo in Chicago. Very luxurious.

Interesting idea, Doug. I'm sure it'd be a nice looking hat. I have a number of wool flat caps that I got on various trips to Ireland over the years. I like them, but don't find them as warm as my fedoras. There are some interesting variations on them, though, like this one:

Nice cap blackthorn but for some reason, I have never liked the button on the brim. I prefer the stitched down style.

Ortega76, I'll have to try and track down that Optimo lid you mentioned.

Maybe it is the fact that I saw The Great Waldo Pepper ten times but in flat caps I tend to like the "Newsboy" style a little better. I have one with an eight part top that I bought in London back in the early 80s. It is wool and was able to stand up to the rainy weather of central Europe nicely.
The reason I bring this up is that the shop where I bought the cap had several other types and one was called a "Driving" cap that had a stitched down brim.

Below is a link to a place that has some samples. I don't know if they are any good but it will give you another idea of what is out there.

How about a Cabbie cap in mink?
